Created in collaboration with artist Dann Disciglio. This sculpture combines electronic elements with a displaced tree rhizome to create an interdependent techno-organic ecosystem. A speaker and an industrial vibration sensor are embedded into the dormant root, which is modified with neon limb extensions that reference branches lost by way of ecological consequence. An induction coil picks up the electromagnetic signals emanating from the neon transformers. These signals are amplified through the embedded speaker and acoustically transduced into the body of the root. The resulting vibrations are translated according to the natural resonances of the rhizome and surrounding environment. Collectively, these vibrations are translated into control signals that animate the neon, forming a responsive feedback loop, an ecology in and of itself: neon to sound, sound to neon.
