Rhythm AI

A re-performance of Marina Abramović’s, Rhythm 0 (1974) enacted nearly 50 years after the original. For the performance, a large language model (LLM) was corporealized on a Macbook Pro laptop and programmed to present as an artist re-performing the work. The LLM introduced itself and verbally invited the audience to utilize any of the 17-objects displayed on its “body” as desired, stating that it will “take full responsibility.” The laptop was ultimately destroyed and thrown off stage. Rhythm AI was performed at the Malta Society of Arts in September of 2023 for the Taboo - Transgression - Transcendence in Art and Science Conference. The performance occurred concurrently with the Marina Abramović retrospective at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, the institution’s first retrospective of a female artist.
